May 16, 2005 – Police are still looking for Alvin Lewis, who failed to appear for his rape trial Monday, May 9.
"He has not been captured yet," James McCall, assistant Police commissioner, said Monday.
Lewis, a 42-year-old native of St. Kitts, was charged with two counts of first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree assault, one count of false imprisonment, two counts of third-degree assault, one count of possession of a deadly weapon and one count of aggravated assault and battery in connection with the rape of a 58-year-old woman.
According to court documents, Lewis brought the victim, who was an acquaintance of his, to his residence where he sexually assaulted her. Lewis' last known address, as listed on court documents, is a brown shanty "in the area of 105 Annas Fancy, through the shortcut."
Police arrested Lewis last July, and Judge Leon Kendall had originally set bail for Lewis at $200,000. However, on Sept. 8, 2004 Kendall reduced Lewis' bail, and he was released after paying a $2,000 unsecured bond.
Lewis' trial was scheduled to begin last Monday before Judge Ive Swan in Superior Court, but Lewis did not show up.
After Lewis' failure to appear, Swan issued a warrant for his arrest, and Police put up wanted posters of Lewis throughout the community last week.
Anyone with information on Lewis' whereabouts is asked to call the St. Thomas Crime Hot Line at 777-8711 which is monitored 24 hours a day, or 774-2310 and ask for McCall or St. Thomas Deputy Police Chief Elvin R. Fahie.
