June 1, 2005 – The murder investigation continued Tuesday into the stabbing death of a 47-year-old Anna's Retreat man. Police officials said Uclid Smith died at Schneider Regional late Monday night about three hours after he was stabbed several times. Smith's uncle was also injured in the attack, according to Deputy Police Chief Elvin Fahie.
"The uncle reported the attack to police," Fahie said Tuesday, noting that Smith was arguing with several men and a fight broke out. When the uncle stepped into the fracas to aid Smith, he was struck in the head with a blunt object and fell to the ground. While on the ground, the unidentified man told police he saw Smith bleeding.
Fahie said the investigation is focusing on the "events which led to the stabbing." A detailed description of the assailants or the exact location of the argument and subsequent knifing were not known Tuesday.
Smith's stabbing death is the sixth murder on St. Thomas this year, the 14th in the territory.
Police were also investigating a Monday-night shooting in the Kirwan Terrace housing community near Lindbergh Bay. Fahie said a 25-year-old man was shot several times. He was rushed to the hospital where he remained in stable condition Tuesday. The victim has told police detectives that he was sitting under "the big tree" in Kirwan Terrace when one or two black masked males approached him from behind and struck him. He fell to the ground and was shot several times. A motive for the 8 p.m. shooting has not been established and no arrests have been made. Fahie said a description of the attackers was not immediately available from the unidentified victim.
