July 14, 2005 – Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen today joined her colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus in calling for a National Weekend of Prayer and Reconciliation for the victims of the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan. The CBC called for this weekend, July 15 to July 17 to be noted in churches, synagogues and mosques across the country to focus spiritual attention on the tragedy that is occurring in our time.

"We gather today to urge leaders and citizens alike in our districts and across the nation to take time this weekend to reflect and pray for the people of Darfur who remain the victims of genocide in the Western region of Sudan," Christensen said today. "I encourage the Virgin Islands community to join in this prayer."

Delegate Christensen said that as Americans, we must help others in this tragic time and bring awareness to this suffering through local events and international petitions. "The situation in Darfur is dire!" she said.

The world should not forget the bloody lessons of Rwanda, the Holocaust and other tragic incidents of man's inhumanity to man. We must remember Dr. Martin Luther King's words that "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," said Christensen. "The world must become involved in word, deed and prayer."
