Education Schedules Territory-Wide Public Forums on Proposed Homework Policy

July 28, 2005 – According to a press release from Dr. Noreen Michael, commissioner of education, public forums are scheduled to introduce the Territorial Homework Policy to the public during August. These forums are open to parents, students, media and the general public.
Michael said, "The mission of the Territorial Homework Policy is to 'enable all students to reach higher levels of achievement and to acquire the knowledge, skills and values they need to become responsible members of a democratic society.' Homework provides both an expression of the state or school's seriousness of purpose as well as a window into each student's daily life at school."
She added, "The VI Department of Education is committed to strengthening the partnership between home and school and to working openly with staff, students, parents and the community. Thus, our efforts to strategically schedule the forums at the onset of the 2005-06 school year when parents, school personnel and students are particularly aware and concerned about school programs and policies."
She stated, "We continue to be committed to creating conditions that allow all students to succeed, thus creating a community of great thinkers."
The draft of the Homework Policy will be available for public review at the commissioner's offices and at the St. John Public Library in Cruz Bay, or at the department web site: www.doe.vi.
The St. John forum will be held Monday, Aug. 22, at the Julius Sprauve School cafeteria from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
