Get Carded @ Your Library During Sign-up Month

0

Sept. 3, 2005 – Commissioner Dean C. Plaskett, Esq., of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources, announces that throughout the month of September, the Virgin Islands will join with the nation to celebrate National Library Card Sign-up Month.
Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of life-time learning., says the press release from the commissioner's office.
The Division of Libraries encourages people to check out what's new at their public library by signing up for a library card. Libraries today offer more than just books – they have videos, CDs, computers, Internet access and more. Libraries are also dynamic community centers for homework, book discussions, exhibits, musical performances, story hours and other programs for children and adults. Librarians are always on hand to help recommend materials suitable for various ages and interests and teach critical information literacy skills – the skills to find, use and evaluate information in all formats. For more information, visit www.library.gov.vi.
All that is needed to obtain a free library card are proper identification and proof of mailing address; and children must be accompanied by a parent.
