The Education of Our Children

0

Another school year is upon us. Whether you have a child or no child, we all know when school starts for traffic will be increased between the hours 7 a.m.-8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. However, as a new school year starts, it gives each and every one of us another opportunity to be more involved in your child's school career. It has been proven that if parents, guardians or interested parties are involved in their child's school performance, this student will be more involved and do better. Though I have no child of my own, I am at fault for not being involved in my two younger cousins' school careers.
Most school PTA's complain that not enough parents, guardians or interested parties attend meetings. Let's all make a stronger effort to get more involved in a younger person's career. While it is easy for the community to get down on young people when they commit crime or do bad things, the community needs to get more involved in the schools and provide after school activities or jobs for these young people. Remember, it is better to see a young person behind a window studying than behind bars, or opening a door for you rather than breaking through it and stealing your possessions. Most can blame this administration for yet another failure in its legacy; however, we all have a responsibility to put up or shut up.
I leave you with this quote from Jesse Jackson (Democratic Convention speech NY, NY July 14,1992): "Few of us are driven by a tailwind. Most of us struggle with head winds. Not all of us can be born tall; some are born short, motherless, abandoned, hungry, orphaned. Somebody has to care. It must be us. And if we do, we will win and deserve to win."
