Sep 22, 2005 — For the third consecutive year, Louis A. Jackson, Frederiksted postmaster, was the recipient of the Benjamin Franklin Award.
According to a press release from the postal service, The ‟Benjamin" is the highest public relations honor conferred by the U.S. Postal Service on postmasters, managers, supervisors, and customer relations coordinators across the country, who have been the most successful in generating positive publicity for the federal agency.
This year, a total of 28 postmasters, managers, supervisors, and customer relations coordinators from all over the nation were honored with this award.
Anthony J. Vegliante, chief human resources officer and executive vice president for the Postal Service and League of Postmasters President Steven Lenoir presented the award to Jackson during the 2005 League of Postmasters National Convention held last month in Puerto Rico.
To earn this award, Jackson and the employees at the Frederiksted Post Office worked hard to keep their customers informed on Post Office closings and retail hours, mailing regulations, window services, Click-n-Ship and other postal issues. They provided tours and presentations to local elementary and high school students, participated in the National Association of Letter Carriers annual Food Drive, promoted National Dog Bite Prevention Week, and participated with the Salvation Army in the Christmas Red Kettle Campaign to collect donations for children, the elderly and the homeless.
Frederiksted employees also supported the U.S. Virgin Islands National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week. In addition, Jackson was recently recognized on a local and national level for the National Play the Zone Program, a competition among Postmasters, and managers to promote the sale of postal products. His unit placed first in the Caribbean District. ‟With contributions like these, it is no surprise that this is Postmaster Jackson's third Benjamin win," said Vegliante.
