Savan Man Dead, 2nd Man Wounded in Saturday Night Shooting

Sept. 25, 2005 – Police are holding a suspect in the death of a Savan resident Saturday night.
Kevin Walker, 24, a native of Antigua, was found dead in front of his residence on Levkoi Strade.
Police responded to a call that came in around 7:50 p.m., according to James McCall, assistant police commissioner. When they arrived at the scene Walker was dead of several gunshot wounds to his body. Another gunshot victim, Iba Matthew, also 24, of Borger Gade had already been taken to the hospital. Matthew is in stable condition at the Schneider Regional Medical Center.
Daryl Blyden, 43, of Vester Gade is in custody, charged with the shootings.
However, police are still asking anyone who may have seen anything or know something about the crime to call 911 and ask for the V.I. Police Department Major Crime Unit, or call 774-2310.
Walker's death marks the 16th homicide for the year on St. Thomas, the 33nd for the territory.
McCall said Sunday morning the police have suspects in close to half of the homicides. He credited Major Crime and the Investigation Bureau in the rapid response and arrest in this case. He also said, "I would like to thank the community for their help." McCall said community members have increasingly come forward with information that is helping police to solve crimes. "I encourage them to continue," he said.
