Low Cost and Free Mammograms in October

Oct. 3, 2005 — The American Cancer Society along with the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute and Schneider Regional Medical Center will offer free mammograms to uninsured women for the entire month of October.
The American Caner Society has deemed October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Candia Petersen, chairwoman and president of ACS St. Thomas/St. John Unit said, in a release from the organization, "In our continued attempt to educate women about breast examinations and healthcare, we are offering free mammograms and breast exams to women who do not have medical insurance on St. Thomas and St. John"
This year the theme is "Take Charge of Your Life and Embrace Your Health" and the focus will be: Lifestyle related factors and Breast Cancer Risk, when to get a mammogram, self examinations, diet, exercise and nutrition and treatment if you are diagnosed with breast cancer.
To register for appointments for free mammograms on St. Thomas call the Schneider Regional Medical Center at 776-8311 ext. 4442. Space is limited so the society recommends early registration. Evening and Saturday appointments are available on St. Thomas.
On St. Croix, the Imaging Center PC, in Sunny Isle, will provide screening mammograms to women who register at a rate of $75. This is only available on Saturdays for the month of October for appointments call 778-2882.
Dr. Shirnett Williamson, the director of Radiation Oncology, for the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute will spearhead this screening on St. Thomas
