Photos of Miss UVI at National Black Campus Queen Competition Available
A selection of photos of Miss UVI Shakima Stoutt, taken during her competition at the National Collegiate Hall of Fame Black Campus Queen Competition held Oct. 5-9 in Atlanta, is now available from the "Current Events" page of the UVI web site. The photos are excerpts from a large slide show prepared by event organizers. The full slide show is available at www.americanwebcast.net/nbcahof/album1.htm. Jay Wiltshire Elected 2005-2006 UVI Student Trustee
UVI senior psychology major Jay Wiltshire has been elected as the 2005-2006 student representative to the UVI Board of Trustees. Wiltshire previously served as the student representative to the board in 2004-2005, while he was studying on UVI's St. Croix campus. Wiltshire has transferred to the St. Thomas campus. The position of student trustee, which is filled by an election, alternates between St. Thomas and St. Croix campus students.
Archived Catalogs Now Available On-line Via UVI Home Page
In addition to the current UVI Catalog, electronic versions of UVI Catalogs for the following academic years — 2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 — are now available on the UVI web site. They can be accessed from the UVI Catalog link on the home page – www.uvi.edu.
UVI 2005-2006 Catalog Distribution Details for New Students
UVI's Office of Enrollment Management has announced that all new freshman and new transfer students on the St. Thomas campus can obtain 2005-2006 UVI Catalogs from the following locations: Commuter Students — Pick up catalogs from the Freshman Center located in Suite 118 of the Classroom Administration (CA) Building; Resident Students – pick up catalogs at the Student Activities Office. All students will be asked to present a UVI ID before receiving a catalog. UVI Catalogs on the St. Croix campus are distributed by the Academic Services Office.
UVI Plans Children's Event to Mark National Chemistry Week on St. Croix
UVI will celebrate National Chemistry Week – observed from Oct. 16 to 23 – with an educational event for children titled "The Joy of Toys" from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Cafetorium on UVI's St. Croix campus. "We will have free hands-on activities for kids and their parents," said Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. Jennifer Spillman. The event, which is geared toward kindergarten through grade six students, will include demonstrations of how toys work using basic principles of chemistry and science. Youngsters will receive a colorful activity newspaper to guide them through each experiment. Activities will include Avogadro's Air Rockets, Zippy Zappy Boats, Cartesian Diver, Meg A. Mole's Bouncing Ball, Super Shrinkers, Milli's Magnificent Bubble Solutions and more. Special prizes will be awarded for completion of all activities. Red Ribbon Week Activities Set Oct. 23-30 on Both Campuses
October 23-30 has been designated Red Ribbon Week on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. Red Ribbon Week – a national drug prevention effort – was created in honor of a drug enforcement agent murdered in Mexico in 1985. A variety of activities are planned on both campuses, beginning with pledge days and red ribbon distribution. Dorm decoration contests and open mic events are also planned. A Youth Forum is also slated from 9 to 11 a.m. on the St. Thomas campus on Friday, Oct. 29, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. For more information on St. Thomas call 693-1120. Contributions Sought for St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture Fair Booklet
Contributions are being sought for the booklet to be published in conjunction with the 2005 St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture Fair. The fair is scheduled for Nov. 18 and 19. Mary Alexander of UVI's Humanities and Social Sciences Division is the editor of the booklet. Contributions – technical articles, photographs, artwork and creative writing – are welcomed from all sectors of the UVI community for possible inclusion. The theme should be centered on agriculture in the Virgin Islands – past, present and future. Send submissions to [email protected] or call 693-1340 for further information. The submission deadline is Monday, Oct. 24.
Articles Sought for 2006 VI Agrifest Bulletin; Fair Set Feb. 18-20, 2006
Articles are being sought for inclusion in the 2006 VI Agrifest Bulletin. The booklet is produced annually for distribution at the VI Agriculture and Food Fair. The theme for next year's fair, which is scheduled for Feb. 18-20, 2006, is "Agriculture and Tourism: A Perfect Mix for 2006." The deadline for submissions is Friday, Oct. 28. St. Thomas Campus Advising and Tutorial Services Center Open for Business
UVI's St. Thomas Campus Advising and Tutorial Services Center, (formerly the Freshman Center) has announced that tutorial services are available in the following subject areas: biology, chemistry, mathematics and Spanish. These services are available Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m. The Campus Advising and Tutorial Services Center is located in Suite 118, on the first floor of the Classroom Administration Building. Blood Drives Set Oct. 25-26 on UVI's St. Croix Campus
The Health Service Center on UVI's St. Croix campus, in collaboration with the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital Blood Bank, will conduct blood drives on Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 3 to 7 p.m. The Blood Bank mobile unit will be on campus to conduct the drive. The Health Service Center is urging the entire UVI Community, as well as the general public, to come out and support this important activity. General Meeting for St. Thomas Freshman Students Set Oct. 27
A general meeting will be held for all Freshman students on UVI's St. Thomas campus from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, in room 303 of the Classroom Administration Building. For details call Vivian Bailey at 693-1226.
Mix and Mingle for Students, Faculty, Staff Set Oct. 27 on St. Thomas Campus
UVI St. Thomas Campus Executive Administrator John D'Orazio and Provost Dr. Al Musah invite faculty, staff and students to a Mix and Mingle – Burgers in Paradise from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, on the UVI golf course. The event was originally scheduled for Oct. 13, but postponed due to recent rains.
St. Croix Campus World Food Day Rescheduled for Oct. 30
Due to recent torrential rains, the World Food Day activities on UVI's St. Croix campus have been rescheduled for Sunday, Oct. 30. The day of family fun activities will run from noon to 6 p.m. On tap are music, workshops, demonstrations, tours of UVI's research facilities, a farmers' market and food vendors' court, petting zoo, children games and the distribution of free vegetable seedlings. All schools and youth groups are invited to take part in the "Kids CAN Make a Difference" food drive and "House of Cans" competition. Donations will go to local food banks. World Food Day is sponsored by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service and Agricultural Experiment Station, and the V.I. Department of Agriculture. For more information, call Clarice Clarke at 692
