Red Ribbon Week Activities Under Way on Both Campuses – Oct. 23-30
The University of the Virgin Islands is celebrating Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 23-30 with activities on both campuses. This year's Red Ribbon Week theme is "Now is the Time to Stop Violence and Crime." Blood Drives Set Oct. 25-26 on UVI's St. Croix Campus
The Health Service Center on UVI's St. Croix campus, in collaboration with the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital Blood Bank, will conduct blood drives on Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 3 to 7 p.m. The Blood Bank mobile unit will be on campus to conduct the drive. The Health Service Center is urging the entire UVI Community, as well as the general public, to come out and support this important activity. Oct. 26 is Early Registration Deadline for Nonpoint Source Conference
Wednesday, Oct. 26, is the early registration deadline for the 9th Virgin Islands Nonpoint Source Pollution Conference scheduled Nov. 28-30 on St. John. UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, Conservation Data Center and Marine Advisory Service are among conference sponsors. This year's conference theme is "Preventing Pollution in the Caribbean: Reshaping Our Communities for the Future." Issues on the agenda include watershed and coastal management, government initiatives, low-impact development, land use, and education and outreach. Participants Sought for Co-ed Intramural Volleyball on St. Thomas Campus
Intramural co-ed volleyball play will begin on Friday, Oct. 28, on UVI's St. Thomas campus. All currently enrolled UVI students, as well as UVI faculty and staff members are eligible to participate. Teams will consist of 10 players, with no more than six players on the court at a time. Teams must have a minimum of three female players on court at all times. No more than two varsity volleyball players may be on the same team. A brief league meeting for team organizers as well as individuals seeking to join a team is scheduled at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the Sports and Fitness Center. Friday, Oct. 28 is the deadline for receipt of articles for the 2006 VI Agrifest Bulletin. The booklet is produced annually for distribution at the VI Agriculture and Food Fair. The theme for next year's fair, which is scheduled for Feb. 18-20, 2006, is "Agriculture and Tourism: A Perfect Mix for 2006." UVI Jazz Ensemble Sets Concert for Saturday, Oct. 29, on St. Thomas
The UVI Music Department will present a UVI Jazz Ensemble Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Dinning Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. The works of big band composers Duke Ellington, Thad Jones and Bob Mintzer will be featured. The concert will also highlight the vocal talents of UVI music majors Detra Davis, Danielle Greenaway, Vashti Hooker and Eugenia Chapman. Monet Davis will perform on clarinet and piano. The concert will include favorites such as Cry Me a River, As Time Goes By and Blue Skies. Ellington favorites Mood Indigo, Cottontail and Solitude will be featured. Also on the program will be Elvin's Mambo and A Brazilian Affair by Bob Mintzer and Thad Jones' Big Dipper. New UVI Student Application Deadline for Spring Semester 2006 is Oct. 30
The spring semester at the University of the Virgin Islands starts on Jan.12, 2006. In order to be admitted to the UVI for this term, all new students must submit all of the following on or before the deadline of Oct. 30, 2005: an admissions application; official CXC, CAPE or GCE results, if applicable; official high school and/or college transcript(s) or GED verification; non-refundable $25 application fee (certified check or money order only); official test results: ACT/SAT (all undergraduate students) GMAT (MPA & MBA applicants). St. Croix Campus World Food Day Scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 30
World Food Day activities on UVI's St. Croix campus are scheduled from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30. The day of family fun activities will include music, workshops, demonstrations, tours of UVI's research facilities, a farmers' market and food vendors' court, petting zoo, children games and the distribution of free vegetable seedlings. All schools and youth groups are invited to take part in the "Kids CAN Make a Difference" food drive and "House of Cans" competition. Donations will go to local food banks. World Food Day – postponed from Oct. 16 due to inclement weather – is sponsored by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service and Agricultural Experiment Station, and the V.I. Department of Agriculture. UVI Schedules English Proficiency Exam (EPE) on Nov. 10
The English Proficiency Examination (EPE), a UVI graduation requirement, will be offered at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. On St. Thomas, the test will be administered at Sports and Fitness Center room 222. On St. Croix, the test will be administered in Evans Center rooms 303, 305 and 308. To be eligible for the Nov. 10 exam, students must register by Friday, Nov. 4, at the Enrollment Management Office in the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus or in the Academic Services Office in the Evans Center on the St. Croix campus.
UVI Nominations for Who's Who Among Students Sought
Individuals interested in submitting UVI nominations for the annual Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges national honors program are being sought. More than 2,000 institutions of higher learning participate in the program. Nov.18 is the deadline for submitting nominations. To qualify, nominated students must: have a GPA of 3.0 or more; have senior class standing; demonstrate leadership ability; participate in extra-curricular activities; and exhibit good citizenship. Nominations must include two letters of recommendation (one from a faculty member), a 250 word autobiographical statement including personal and career goals, and three forms attesting to leadership and involvement in extracurricular activities. Forms are available in the Student Affairs Office in Evans Center room 802 and in the Academic Services Office in Evans Center room 811. Reichhold Schedules Tito Nieves Concerts for St. Croix, St. Thomas
Two Virgin Islands concerts by Tito Nieves – the "Pavarotti of Sala" – will be presented by UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts in November. Nieves performs first at Island Center on St. Croix on Nov. 11. He comes to the Reichhold Center on St. Thomas on Nov. 12.
UVI Little Theatre to Produce 'Seven Guitars' Nov. 11 – 14
UVI Little Theatre has announced that its fall production will be the August Wilson play "Seven Guitars." One of Wilson's six Drama Circle Award winning plays, "Seven Guitars" will be presented on Nov. 11-14 in the UVI Little Theatre, located in the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus. Tickets will go on sale Oct. 26 at Dockside Bookstore, Modern Music (Nisky Center), UVI Bookstore and the UVI Humanities Building on the St. Thomas campus. UVI-UCEDD November Workshops to Focus on Accessibility and Advocacy
UVI's University Center for Excellence on Developmental Disabilities (UVI-UCEDD) in conjunction the Northeast ADA IT Center at Cornell University will host two workshops in November, with sessions of each on both St. Croix and St. Thomas.
Access in the Hospitality Industry — The first workshop is titled: "Access in the Hospitality Industry – It's About Business Opportunities: Accessibility is Profitable." Sessions will take place on Monday, Nov. 14, on St. Croix at the Carambola Beach Resort and on Wednesday, Nov. 16, on St Thomas at Marriott Frenchman's Reef.
Update on ADA and Advocacy — The second workshop is titled: "Update on ADA and Advocacy: How to Make a Difference in Your Community for Persons with Disabilities." Sessions will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 15, on St. Croix at the Carambola Beach Resort and on Thursday, Nov. 17, on St. Thomas at the Windward Passage Hotel.

UVI Students Preparing Public Presentation on Microbiology for Nov. 18
Ten students enrolled in UVI's fall semester Biology of Microorganisms I class are preparing a public presentation on the basics of microbiology. Instructor Dr. Stan Lorbach says his students envision a 70-minute presentation on microbiology – the study of microscopic organisms such as bacteria and viruses. The students are writing a summary of their microbiology text book and developing practical demonstrations of laboratory techniques suitable for UVI students and faculty as well as members of the Virgin Islands community. Lorbach said his students are excited about the project, which is part of their graded course work. Science and Math Division to Introduce Starlab to the VI in November
UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics is preparing to bring the universe to the Virgin Islands with public introductions of the Starlab mobile planetarium in November. Public demonstrations on the University's St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses are scheduled for Nov. 13 and Nov. 19, respectively. Purchased with funds from a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) grant, Starlab is an inflatable planetarium that can accommodate 60 adults and about 70 children, according to Dr. Robert Giacosi, outreach coordinator for the Science and Mathematics Division. In addition to these community days, Starlab will be made available to school groups from both islands – on Nov. 14 and 15 on St. Croix and on Nov. 18 and 19 on St. Thomas.
