Islands Celebrate Recycling Month

Nov. 8, 2005 – November is Recycling Month in the Virgin Islands as well as the rest of the United States, and the V.I. Waste Management Authority has a few activities planned to remind residents about the importance of recycling.
Stella Saunders, publications manager at the Waste Management Authority, said the agency will hold Recycling Fairs on St. Thomas and St. Croix. A similar event was held Nov. 5 on St. John.
The St. Thomas Recycling Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Fort Christian parking lot in Charlotte Amalie.
On St. Croix, the event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Sunny Isle Shopping Center.
Saunders said that residents should bring used motor oil, old cell phones and electronic waste such as computers, printers, central processing units, monitors, fax machines, printers, and telephones to the event so they can be recycled.
"Just bring them to us on that day," she said.
The Waste Management Authority also sponsored a poster contest and aluminum can collecting contest for the territory's schools. Winners will be announced Nov. 15, which is America Recycles Day.
Saunders said the winning posters will become part of a calendar to be distributed by the Waste Management Authority.
She said the aluminum can collection contest serves as a fund raiser for the schools. Saunders said schools on St. Thomas and St. John receive 20 cents per pound of cans, while those on St. Croix get 25 cents a pound.
"The recycler set the prices," she said.
While the Waste Management Authority currently does not have a program to recycle aluminum cans and other items such as plastic and paper, residents can still recycle aluminum cans and other metals at STS on St. Thomas and EZ Recycling Center on St. Croix.
STS pays 20 cents a pound for aluminum cans as well as varying amounts for other materials. They include scrap aluminum and metal such as brass, copper tubing, copper wire, radiators, cast aluminum, condensers, catalytic converters, and "anything we can get sold," Owner Erna Lynch said.
She said St. John residents can drop off their aluminum cans and scrap metals on their trips to St. Thomas.
To reach STS, make a left off Moravian Highway at the turnoff for Nisky Moravian Church. Make the next right and follow the road until you reach Santana Auto Body. STS is next door.
STS is open 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 775-3670.
EZ Recycling Center on St. Croix pays 25 cents a pound for aluminum cans and varying amounts for other metals. They recycle copper pipe, brass, radiators, condensers, catalytic converters, insulated copper, cast aluminum, aluminum window frames, and more.
Owner Victor Martinez said the company picks up recyclables. Additionally, it will supply drums and plastic bags to businesses that want to recycle aluminum cans.
EZ Recycling Center is located near the Public Works Department at Anna's Hope off Queen Mary Highway. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Call EZ Recycling Center at 778-0100.
Gov. Charles Turnbull in a Monday press release urged residents to observe Recycling Month and support recycling and antilitter efforts.
