CYFAR Participants to Receive Certificates Today (Nov. 10)
On Thursday, Nov. 10, 14 students, including a mother and son, will receive certificates of completion from the Computer Training Course of the Children, Youth and Families-At-Risk (CYFAR) Program on the University of the Virgin Islands' St. Croix campus. The closing program will be held from 6:30 pm. until 7:30 p.m. in room B-100 on the western end of the St. Croix campus. A news release is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
Road Repairs Scheduled for Friday, Nov. 11, on St. Thomas Campus
UVI's Physical Plant has announced that repairs to St. Thomas's upper campus loop road from the Nursing to Science and Math buildings are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 11. Work is scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Physical Plant regrets any inconvenience this may cause.
Second Boat Chartered for UVI's Virgin Gorda Get-Away
The UVI Student Activities Office has announced that a second boat has been chartered for Friday's Virgin Gorda (BVI) Get-Away. Student Activities Coordinator Junie Violenes said the second boat was arranged so that individuals on a waiting list could be accommodated. Anyone still interested in taking the Virgin Gorda trip should call the Student Activities Office at 693-1110 immediately to make arrangements. The boats will leave St. Thomas at 8 a.m. and return at 3 p.m. Cost is as follows: UVI St. Thomas and St. Croix students – $30, faculty/staff – $50, non-staff guest $70; children 12 and under – $25. The price includes: land transport from UVI to downtown Charlotte Amalie; a Historical Tour; transport to The Baths; Tortola departure tax and lunch on Virgin Gorda.
Tournament of Champions Cancelled
A pre-season "Tournament of Champions" scheduled for Nov. 10-12 at UVI's Sports and Fitness Center has been cancelled.
UVI to Close Nov. 11 for Veterans' Day
The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Friday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans' Day.
Tito Nieves Opens in St. Croix on Nov. 11; St. Thomas on Nov. 12
Tito Nieves – the "Pavarotti of Sala" – will present the first of two Virgin Islands concerts on St. Croix, on Friday, Nov. 11, at Island Center. Nieves brings his show to UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on Saturday, Nov. 12. Both shows start at 8 p.m. More information is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
UVI Little Theatre Fall Production of 'Seven Guitars' Set Nov. 11 – 14
"Seven Guitars," the fall production at UVI's Little Theatre, opens on Friday, Nov. 11, for a four day run. Presentations of the August Wilson play are scheduled at 8 p.m. nightly through Nov. 14. The UVI Little Theatre is located on the second floor of the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus. Tickets are on sale at Dockside Bookstore, Modern Music (Nisky Center), UVI Bookstore and the UVI Humanities Building on the St. Thomas campus. UVI to Host ODI Tennis Championships on St. Croix Beginning Nov. 11
The University of the Virgin Islands will host the ODI Tennis Championships this weekend at the Buccaneer Hotel tennis club on St. Croix. Athletes from seven ODI universities will participate. Round-robin singles play begins at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, with the top four qualifiers in both men's and women's divisions playing. Doubles play will begin at the conclusion of the singles competition. The ODI Tennis Team Championship will be determined by the cumulative scores from all matches. UVI men's team members Alex Dennis and David Hartzell have qualified to play in the singles and doubles competition. Lecture at Chase Auditorium to Discuss Abakua Secret Society on Nov. 12
The Adams Musical Research Institute will present a lecture at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, in Chase Auditorium on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Dr. Igor Miller, an AMRI Rockefeller Resident Fellow, will discuss the Abakua Secret Society, a mutual aid society, and the musical culture associated with it. Dr. Miller has just returned from fieldwork in Cuba. The Abakua Society exists in Nigeria, Cuba, and in immigrant populations in New York City. For more information, contact Dr. Lorna C. French Week Activities to Conclude with Workshop on Nov. 12
French Week activities at UVI will conclude on Saturday, Nov. 12, with workshop by photographer Freddy Icart. The workshop – titled "Understanding Cultures Through Visual Communication" – will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 1-3 p.m. in Classroom Administration Building room 304 (computer lab). Science and Math to Introduce Starlab Sunday, Nov. 13 on St. Croix
UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics is preparing to bring the universe to the Virgin Islands with public introductions of the Starlab mobile planetarium on Sunday, Nov. 13 on St. Croix, and again on Saturday, Nov. 19 on St. Thomas. CES to Offer Workshop/Field Trip on Salt River Bay National Park on Nov. 13
The University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Service, Agriculture and Natural Resources Program is offering a free workshop and field trip on the natural and cultural history of the Salt River Bay National Park. The workshop is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13, in the UVI Research and Extension Center, Room 133 on the St. Croix Campus. Participants Sought for UVI Intramural Program
There is still time for students, faculty and staff to join in UVI intramural sports programs on the St. Thomas campus. The following activities are underway:
+ Singles Table Tennis: male and female divisions, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. in Sports & Fitness Center.
+ Archery: male and female divisions, Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. on the golf course
+ Coed Volleyball: Team captains need to enter team rosters ASAP. The only team to have entered, as of Nov. 9, is "Staff." Let's not let "Staff" win it that easily.

Community Invited to Discussion on Hip Hop Culture Nov. 15 at Little Theatre
The Humanities Senior Seminar class on UVI's St. Thomas campus will conduct a symposium entitled "Mic Check: A Discussion on Hip Hop Culture," from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15, in the UVI Little Theater. Symposium Participants include: Miniminyha deMund, Sylvanie Frett, Samantha Harlow, Monyka Johnigan, Shanica Maduro, Mayleen Neaves, Ryan Skinner and Michadia Viera. University Lecture Series Schedules Third Installment on St. Croix on Nov. 16
The third installment of the University Lecture Series on UVI's St. Croix campus is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16. Speakers will address the topic of what characteristics and values a village must possess to nurture its youth. Presenters will include: Terrence Joseph, superintendent for the Department of Education; Attorney Ha
rold Willocks, Chief Public Defender; May Adams Cornwall, PTSA president at the Educational Complex; and Reginald Perry, pastor of Victorious Believers Church. SBDC Seminar on Personal Budgeting Scheduled for Nov. 16
A seminar titled "How to Develop and Manage an Effective Budget" is scheduled by UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The presenter will be Daryl Edwards, an SBDC business counselor. The seminar will emphasize personal and household budgeting. Pre-registration is required. Admission is $20. Open House for High School Seniors Set Nov. 17 on UVI's St. Croix Campus
The UVI Office of Admissions will conduct an open house for college-bound high school seniors on the University's St. Croix campus on Thursday, Nov. 17. Open house activities, which will include campus tours, will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Interested individuals should call Charmaine Smith at 692-4070 to indicate their intention to participate.
St. Thomas/St. John Ag Fair Set Nov. 19-20 at Reichhold Grounds
The 2005 St. Thomas/St. John Ag Fair is scheduled for Nov. 19 and 20 on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. The popular fair will again feature a wide variety of displays and exhibitions. This year's events will feature a live stock exhibition, displays of locally grown produce, local foods and drinks, vegetable garden and landscaping plants for sale, a local arts and crafts area and several booths featuring information about UVI's various departments and units. And, as always, the fair will feature numerous games and attractions for children. Among these will be pony cart rides, inflated slides and go-cart rides. The fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. An opening ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Nov. 19. It will feature Gov. Charles W. Turnbull, members of the V.I. legislature and representatives from the UVI Cooperative Extension Service, the V.I. Department of Agriculture and the St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture Fair Committee. Student Music Recital Scheduled on Nov. 20 on St. Thomas Campus
UVI's Music Education Degree Program will present a student recital at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, in the Music building on the St. Thomas campus. The recital will showcase the talent of music majors and others enjoying the benefits of music education. The UVI community is invited to join the students for an afternoon of music.
UVI Concert Band to Present First Christmas Concert on St. Croix
For the first time ever the University of the Virgin Islands Concert Band will perform a Christmas Concert on St. Croix. The 18-member band and its director Prof. Austin A. Venzen will present "A Crucian Christmas Spirit" over the Thanksgiving weekend. While on St. Croix the band members and Prof. Venzen will hold a free concert for school children, a community concert and a student recruitment day. The community concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26, at the St. Croix Educational Complex High School auditorium. A news release is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
UVI MBA Comprehensive Exam Rescheduled for Dec. 9
UVI's MBA Comprehensive Exam, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 18, has been rescheduled for Friday, Dec. 9. The exam will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m in room 222 of the Sports and Fitness Center on St.Thomas and in the Research Extension Building room 139 on the St.Croix campus.
