Dec. 29, 2005 — Gov. Charles W. Turnbull paid tribute Thursday to the memory of former Gov. Alexander A. Farrelly, fourth elected governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, on what would have been Farrelly's 82nd birthday.
A U.S. Army Sergeant, lawyer, judge, senator and governor, Farrelly was born in Frederiksted, St. Croix on Dec. 29, 1923 to Patrick and Mary Farrelly.
The late governor is one of a very small number of Virgin Islanders to have excelled in all three branches of the V.I. government.
In May 2002 the Legislature conferred the V.I. Medal of Honor on him in recognition of his distinguished career of service.
Former Gov. Farrelly died in Arlington, Va., on Sept. 10, 2002 and is buried in Western Cemetery on St. Thomas.
In a proclamation issued at the time of his death, Turnbull said, "The passing of the Honorable Alexander A. Farrelly represents the loss of a Virgin Islander of great stature and notable significance in V.I. history whose life and career left an indelible mark on the lives of the people of the territory."
