Dec. 29, 2005 — Thanks to the Department of Education, public school teachers in the territory will have a chance to experience life as a UVI student. And the best part is that it will cost them virtually nothing.
In a press release from the Department of Education, Human Resources Director Alscess Lewis-Brown said the department will pay for all tuition costs, fees and books for one course at UVI — up to $468 for an undergraduate course or $963 for a graduate course at an accredited online university. The courses must be taken during the spring 2006 semester.
Public school support staff and paraprofessionals are also eligible. All courses for paraprofessionals and support staff will be at the undergraduate level, but a course for a non-teaching staff member can be at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Paraprofessionals must enroll in education courses or courses that will lead to an education degree, but other non-teaching staff may take any course that relates to their job.
To sign up, teachers and other public school professionals must visit the Division of Human Resources on scheduled work days between Wednesday, Dec. 28 and Tuesday, Jan. 10. Education will not allow telephone sign-ups at this time. Selection is on a first-come first-served basis.
For more information on the program, call Human Resources at 773-1095, ext. 356, 358 or 362 (St. Croix); or 774-0100, ext. 3077, 3226 or 3039 (St. Thomas).
