Women Retain Buccaneer Cup Again

Jan. 9, 2006 — The 2005 Buccaneer Cup, a Ryder Cup-like format contested every year at The Buccaneer Golf Course, was completed Saturday, with the women's team halving the matches with the men's team and thus retaining the Cup for another year. The women's team had won the Cup in 2004, and needed only to split the matches with the men's team in order to retain the Cup. The men would have had to win more than half the matches (or 4 ½ points) in order to take the Cup away from the women.
The first round of the matches, a two-person best ball format, was played in October, the usual month for the event. Heavy rains stopped play on the first day of the matches, and both teams agreed that since the matches were evenly split at that point, they would consider the day to end in a tie. The second day of play, the singles matches, would determine the outcome of the event.
Rain prohibited play of any kind on the second day, and so the singles matches were postponed until Jan. 7. The men's Team began the day with an early lead, but the women ultimately prevailed. Debi Smith came back from 3 down in her matches against Steve Myrvang to halve the match. She had Ray Smith down one hole going into the last hole, but he made a birdie putt on that hole to win the hole and even that match.
Brad Thomas and Kevin Scott won their matches against Gloria Joseph and Shirley Bassue, bringing the day's score to 3 to 1 in favor of the men. Next, Joanna Isherwood defeated Kevin May and Dick Isherwood lost to Joanna Myrvang, evening the matches at three all.
Sherry May led Mike Stomieroski all day and closed out her match on the 17th hole to give her team the fourth point necessary to ensure that the Cup would stay with the women's team. The final match of the day, between Marcia Scott and Jim Smith, looked to favor the women as Scott was two up going into the 15th hole. However, Smith birdied the hole to win it and ultimately prevailed over Scott, preventing the women's team from winning the Cup outright.
Men's team captain Tim Johnston said, "We might have gotten that extra half point, but I had called a penalty on one of our players for grounding his club in a hazard, which resulted in the loss of the hole. But we played hard and honorably, and I'm proud that the match ended in a tie. I'm sure it will give us the incentive to come back out in 2006 and win the Cup back for the men."
Women's Team Captain Jeanne Johnston countered, "This makes three times in a row that the women's team has prevailed over the men. I am continually impressed with how seriously the women take it and dig deep to hold fast against a team that looks better on paper. It just shows how much heart they have."
