Historians to Discuss Salt River's Past, Future

Jan. 16, 2006 – The Society of Virgin Islands Historians will host its Eighteenth Annual Conference Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the St. Croix Campus of the University of the Virgin Islands, in the Cafetorium.
The topic will be "Salt River, St. Croix: Historical Perspectives and Future Development."
The program will consist of the following presentations:
– Meredith Hardy, National Park Service Archaeologist, "Archaeology and Prehistory at Salt River."
– Dr. Eric Klingelhofer, historian at Mercer University, "Salt River in Historical Times."
– Wilfredo Geigel, attorney and historian, "Is Salt River Columbus" Landing Site in St. Croix?"
– Dr. Janne Jøørgesen- Liburd, historian at Southern Denmark University, "Sustainable Tourism, Contested
Heritage and National Park Development in the Salt River National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve of St. Croix."
– Dr. David Edgell, professor at East Carolina University, "The U.S. Virgin Islands Newest Sustainable
Tourism Product: St. Croix-Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve."
These presentations will be followed by remarks by Senator Lorraine Berry.
Admission is free and the public is invited to take part.
