Jan. 19, 2006 – Concluding a nationwide search, the University of the Virgin Islands has appointed Dr. Monique Guillory the St. Croix campus executive administrator. Guillory, who was most recently executive director of the Mississippi Learning Institute at Jackson State University and an English professor at Jackson State, will assume the St. Croix CEA post on Jan. 20.
Guillory, a Louisiana native, holds a bachelor's degree in English literature and rhetorical communications from Tulane University. She earned a master's degree and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from New York University, and in 1999 returned to Tulane as an assistant professor in the English department.
With extensive experience in higher education, she has taught at the Haitian American Institute in Port au Prince, at the University of California – Santa Barbara, the College of New Rochelle, and was deputy chief of staff and strategic planning coordinator at Jackson State University. In addition to grant writing and helping to create a strategic plan, she has demonstrated strong skills in the area of team building across administrative and academic components.
"I think it's a great time to be coming to the University," Guillory said, noting UVI's progression with its new strategic plan Vision 2012. "I'm hoping that I can bring a lot of energy and new perspectives to some of the challenges," she said.
UVI's campus executive administrator positions were created following a reorganization that eliminated campus chancellors. CEAs oversee student affairs, business and facilities operations, and security on each of UVI's campuses. John A. D'Orazio was appointed St. Thomas campus executive administrator in July 2005. Guillory and D'Orazio are members of UVI President LaVerne E. Ragster's cabinet.
With the arrival of Guillory, acting St. Croix Campus Executive Administrator Dr. Deborah Fontaine will assume her new role as chief of staff to Ragster.
