The Nigel O. Hodge Foundation Fund Sponsors Walk-a-Thon

Feb. 28, 2006 – A walk-a-thon will be held on Friday morning at 9 a.m., March 3. Students from the Jarvis Elementary School will participate in the third annual walk-a-thon from the school to Emancipation Garden. There will be a brief ceremony when the students arrive in Emancipation Garden. Donations will be accepted if you haven't yet sponsored a student for the walk.
All proceeds of this walk-a-thon will provide the Nigel O. Hodge Fund with additional resources to help children with cancer and other critical illnesses in the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. The event celebrates the life of Nigel O. Hodge, who died in 1994 as a result of medical mistakes made by doctors treating the youth for Hodgkin's disease.
Nigel, a sixth grader had come home from school complaining of a lump under his arm. Two weeks later doctors diagnosed him with Hodgkin's disease. Just 38 days after his first symptoms appeared, Nigel was dead. After his death, it was determined Nigel was given repeated doses of the wrong type of chemotherapy. Determined Nigel's death would not be in vain, the Hodge family created the Nigel O. Hodge Foundation Fund at CFVI using monies from a wrongful death lawsuit. Since its establishment in 1996, the Nigel Hodge Fund has provided information, support, and financial assistance to children afflicted with
critical illnesses.
An adult walk-a-thon was held on Feb. 18, when 35 members, friends and supporters of the Nigel O. Hodge Fund walked from Emancipation Garden to Brewers Bay Beach. It began with a display of "feet" with contributors' names on them. This display is in the court at the Tutu Mall. Raffle tickets were also sold for the last few months in an effort to raise funds. A raffle was held after the Feb. 18 walk and the following people won prizes:
1st prize; Eva Donovan: A Caribbean Cruise for two
2nd prize; Albert Heywood: Weekend stay for two at Wyndham Sugar Bay
3rd prize; Julian Magras: Dinner for two at Amalia Cafe
