March 30, 2006 – Thanks to efforts by Mahogany Run Golf Course's parent company, Ginn Clubs and Resorts, comedian Michael Winslow will read to fourth- and fifth-grade students from Jane E. Tuitt and Dober Elementary Schools, as well as students from Sts. Peter and Paul School.
"They [Ginn] want to be a good corporate citizen," Planning and Natural Resources Department spokesman Jamal Nielsen said Thursday.
The event, part of the golf course's Resort to Reading program, will be held at 9 a.m. April 4 at Sts. Peter and Paul School Cafetorium.
Ryan Julison, Ginn Clubs' vice president of corporate communications, said that the company started the Resort to Reading program because it is family oriented.
"Education is one of our major platforms," he said.
He said that Winslow is a good role model for the children who will hear him read. "And he's got a great rapport with the kids," he said.
Winslow, who played Sgt. Larvell Jones in the TV and movie series "Police Academy," is known as "the human sound effects machine." He can imitate more than 1,000 sounds using his voice alone.
Winslow has had roles in other television shows and movies and is known for his stand-up comedy. He made his film debut in "Cheech And Chong's Next Movie," which was followed by "Cheech And Chong's Nice Dreams." His movie career continued with featured roles in "Alphabet City" with Vincent Spano and "Grand View USA" starring Jamie Lee Curtis.
Territorial librarian Wallace D. Williams said the program enhances the department's capability to encourage and reward reading.
According to a press release from Planning, Ginn Clubs and Resorts donated $25,000 to Enid Baa Library on St. Thomas last year when it kicked off its Resort to Reading program. Additionally, the release notes that Ginn wants to support programs that have an impact on the island's youth.
