Public Works to Tackle Suicide Hill

0

April 3, 2006 – The Public Works Department will start repairs at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday on Route 404, known as Suicide Hill, on St. Thomas's North Side.
The road, which is steep and deeply potholed, will be restricted to one lane of traffic on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
At a meeting in January about North Side road repairs, Public Works Commissioner George Phillips said the engineers would work out how the road would best be negotiated when the necessary repairs began.
The road is slippery when wet, and often cars that don't have front or four-wheel drive or that don't get a running start are forced to back down the hill because they cannot make it up the steepest part.
In a release Monday, Phillips asked motorists to "exercise caution and look for flagmen and traffic signs as they traverse Route 404."
