Workshops Offered for Groups Using Summer Feeding Program

April 10, 2006 – Public and private nonprofit organizations that expect to use the Education Department's Summer Feeding Program are invited to workshops about the program.
Education Department spokesman Juel Anderson said the federally funded program provides meals for nonprofit organizations and entities such as summer youth programs sponsored by senators.
She said it functions like the school lunch program in which the federal government, through the U.S. Agriculture Department, provides commodity foods such as cheese that the staff uses to prepare meals.
Anderson said the program provides free meals for children up to age 18, disabled people age 19 and older, and people participating in public or private nonprofit school programs for the mentally ill or physically disabled.
Workshops will be held on St. Thomas from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 19 at the Education Department's video-teleconference center on Kongens Gade.
On St. Croix, a workshop is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 20 at the Curriculum Center in Kingshill.
