Locally Available Scholarships 2006-2007


Following are summaries of information provided to the Source by sponsoring organizations about scholarships currently available.

The Community Foundation of The Virgin Islands
Donor organization: William Otto and Shari Decker Fund Music 2006 Scholarship
Number of Scholarships: One.
Amount of Scholarships: $2,500.
The student must be a senior at Charlotte Amalie High School or Ivanna Eudora Kean High School with plans to major in music after graduation, must have also applied for admission or be accepted to a college or university, have a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need.
Deadline: April 15, 2006.

The applications are available at both Charlotte Amalie High School and Ivanna Eudora Kean High School or directly from CFVI's office. HOVENSA Scholarship Program
Donor organization: HOVENSA L.L.C. Scholarship Program
Number of Scholarships: Not announced.
Amount of scholarship: The amount of a scholarship award can be as much as $2,000 per year for a student who will attend the University of the Virgin Islands or $4,000 per year for a student who will attend an accredited U. S. college or university outside of the Virgin Islands. Once awarded, a scholarship continues for four years provided that the recipient continues enrollment as a full-time student at an accredited college or university and maintains good academic standing at the institution.
The HOVENSA Scholarship Program is open to all persons enrolled in a high school in the U. S. Virgin Islands, have maintained a grade average of "B" (3.0) or higher, have resided in the Virgin Islands for at least fifteen (15) years prior to the date of their application, or whose parents have resided here for at least fifteen years immediately prior to that date, and have financial need.

Applications for a HOVENSA scholarship are available from the office of the guidance counselor at all high schools in the U. S. Virgin Islands.
Gertrude Lockhart Dudley Melchoir Scholarship Fund
Donor Organization: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
Number of Scholarships: Not Announced
Amount of Scholarship: $1,000.
Graduating high school seniors with a GPA of 2.75 or better, evidence of leadership qualities, letters of recommendations, essay, scholarship application and transcript. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for April 20 and April 21. Only applicants that meet the required criteria will be interviewed. Applicants will be notified of interview time and date. Virgin Islands Department of Education
Donor organization: Robert C. Byrd Scholarship
Number of Scholarships: not announced
Amount of Scholarships: $1,500. The scholarshop can be renewed for four years if eligibility is maintained.
The student must be a graduating student of the St. Thomas-St. John District Schools who has been accepted into a college or university for the fall of 2006. Applicants must have a cumulative average of "C" or better.
Deadline: April 21, 2006.
How/where to obtain an application:
The applications can be obtained from guidance counselors at public, private and parochial schools throughout the district, the Office of the Commissioner or at the Superintendent's Office located at the Curriculum Center in Estate Tutu.

Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority
Donor Organization: Alva C. McFarlane Engineering Scholarship
Number of scholarships: four scholarships, one at each level, in both the St. Croix and the St. Thomas/St. John/Water Island districts.
Amount of scholarship: Up to $60,000 for students to earn a bachelor's degree in engineering and up to $20,00 for students to earn an associate's degree in electronics engineering or electronics technology.
McFarlane Scholars will be selected based on high school academic performance, community service record, personal interview and financial need. Scholars must return to full time paid employment at the Authority for a period of time equal to the period of the scholarship award received. WAPA has a critical need for electrical engineers so preference will be given to applicants seeking a degree in that field of study. Students studying for a bachelor's degree must enroll in the five year (3-2) engineering program at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). This program, conducted in partnership with Columbia University in New York City and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri Students, requires that students attend UVI for their first three years of study and complete the degree at one of the pre-selected universities during the last two years.
Applicants for the associate's degree scholarship must be accepted by a college or university accredited by a recognized educational accrediting organization in the United States. They are expected to return to WAPA after graduation to fulfill their obligation to the company.

St. Thomas Board of Realtors
Donor Organization: St. Thomas Board of Realtors
Number of Scholarships: Two.
Amount of Scholarships: $2,000.
Student must be college bound and must write an essay on this theme: "Write About Your Ideas on How to Utilize the Abandoned Government Properties That Adorn Our Island."

Board of Education of the Virgin Islands
Donor organization: The Morris F. deCastro Fellowship Board
Number of scholarships: not announced.
Amount of scholarships: not announced.
1) Be a bona-fide resident of the Virgin Islands.
2) Be an employee or official in active service of the V.I. government.
3) Applicant must have made an outstanding contribution during the preceding year.
4) Be accepted to an accredited institution of higher learning.
5) Be nominated by either the governor, the president of the Legislature, the presiding judge of the district or territorial courts, or the administrator of St. John or any executive department.
