Zuber, Williams Take 2006 Gatorade Carnival Mile

0

April 29, 2006 — A total of 94 runners and walkers of all ages got out of their beds early to dash to the finish Saturday for the St. Thomas Association of Roadrunners' 24th annual Carnival Mile. Sponsored by Gatorade, the race — a one-mile dash stretching from Western Cemetery to Roosevelt Park — was held to benefit the American Red Cross of the Virgin Islands.
The winner of last week's Run for Cover race, Jeremy Zuber had caught the early St. John ferry and endured the long ride from Red Hook to get to the starting line on time. Four minutes and 46 seconds after the start, he captured first place among the men, sprinting the last part of the race relatively unchallenged.
Similarly, outstanding middle-distance specialist Aniecia Williams — who had broken through the 12-minute barrier for two miles at the Women's Jogger Jam in March and captured a medal at the CARIFTA games earlier in April — posted a women's first-place time of 5:32. With no other woman coming within 1 minute and 24 seconds of her time, the Ivanna Eudora Kean senior challenged even the top male finishers. Many consider Williams to possess world-class potential in the middle distances.
Winners were recognized in seven female and seven male age groups. Complete results follow below. Although there were many good performances worth noting, special attention should may be paid to the 6:56 time of Mellisa King in winning the 30-39 age group and to the 6:52 finish of 11-year-old Malik Todman in his age group.
Although the race course was especially busy with cars this year, the runners were attended by volunteers of the Civil Air Patrol, the American Red Cross and members of STAR.
