CFVI Asks for Nominations for Volunteer Awards

May 2, 2006 – The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands is requesting nominations for the Silverbells and Cockleshells Award no later than May 31, according to a press release from CFVI.
Individuals and civic, grass roots or other non-profit groups are invited to submit nominations for creative, innovative and effective programs or projects that address the findings in KIDS COUNT. The findings include child poverty, teen births, dropouts and child abuse and neglect. You may self-nominate or propose others for consideration. Nominations must be submitted on the official CFVI Award form, which may be duplicated.
"The Silverbells and Cockleshells Award was launched by CFVI in 2002 as an annual KIDS COUNT event. The purpose of the program is to acknowledge and reward the hard work and tenacious spirit of individuals and organizations in the United States Virgin Islands that are working to improve the lives of children and families. Highest consideration is given to volunteer efforts," explained CFVI's president, Dee Baecher-Brown.
In 2005, three volunteer individuals were awarded Silverbells and Cockleshells Awards. The Gold Award went to Marge Tonks, who received a $1,000 award for her volunteer work on St. Croix. This 88 year-old retired teacher has been a VISTA volunteer at Camp Arawak. She continues to be a prison visitor and a volunteer with the Women's Coalition, Interfaith Coalition, IFC Volunteer Caregivers Program and Alternatives to Violence Project.
The $500 Silver Award was given to Corine Matthias for her work on St. John. She has been a parent volunteer for the Love City Pan Dragons Youth Steel Orchestra for many years and has served as president since 2002.
Monique Green-Lynch received 2005's Bronze Award of $250 for her work as a volunteer choir conductor on St. Thomas. She has conducted the Children's and Young People's Choirs and Adult Gospel Choir at the Memorial Moravian Church for 18 years.
Up to ten monetary awards will be presented at a special KIDS COUNT program in December 2006.
Application forms are available by calling CFVI at 774-6031.
