Memorial Day Observances Planned for All Three Islands

May 24, 2006 – In a press release issued by Gov. Turnbull's office, the chief executive urged V.I. residents to unite in observance of Memorial Day, Monday May 29.
Memorial Day activities scheduled for St. Croix will begin with a procession from the Frederiksted Post Office square to the Frederiksted Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. to salute the soldiers buried on land. The procession will continue to the Ann E. Abramson Pier, where a seaside ceremony will be held for soldiers lost at sea. The Memorial Day commemoration program will take place at 10 a.m. at the Buddhoe Park bandstand.
St. Thomas activities will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the laying of the wreath and flag raising ceremony at Western Cemetery No. 1, followed by a procession up Main Street to the Coast Guard dock for the 10 a.m. seaside memorial. A Memorial Day program will be held at 11 a.m. at Emancipation Garden.
On St. John, the American Legion Viggo E. Sewer Post No. 131 will hold a brief Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. at the National Park dock, followed by a parade from Mongoose Junction to continue along the waterfront to the cemetery at Gallows Point in Cruz Bay.
Gov. Turnbull has ordered that on Monday, May 29, all flags on government buildings and facilities will be flown at half staff from sunrise until noon.
