Christmas Music Fest Promises Anything But a Silent Night

Nov. 10, 2006 — Get an early start on the holiday season with the second annual St. John Christmas Music Festival. Entitled "With Love from Love City," the two-day event will offer gospel, rhythm and blues, and even a parade featuring ole saint Nick himself.
"It's an opportunity for the community to celebrate the holiday season with our children and to put the love back in Love City," producer Steve Simon said, adding that all events are free.
The festival starts up at the Winston Wells Ballfield on Dec. 2 with an 8 p.m. performance by rhythm and blues recording artist Michael Dunstan.
"Michael Dunstan is the male version of Aretha Franklin – an amazing showstopper who is by far the most talented R&B singer I have ever heard," Simon said. The Jazz Islanders, Paradise People and guest artist Victor Provost will also perform.
The following night, a candlelight parade from Mongoose Junction past the Cruz Bay ferry dock to the Winston Wells Ballfield will begin at 6:30 p.m. The grand marshal will be none than Santa Claus, who'll be passing out presents to the children in attendance.
The evening wraps up with a tasty helping of holiday-inspired gospel music featuring Maryel Epps, the gospel recording artists Of God and a performance by Eco People.
According to Simon, Maryel Epps is a high-energy gospel singer who has gained renown for her charismatic, uplifting performances.
According to Simon, Epps has quite a pedigree, performing or recording with the likes of Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle and David Bowie.
Epps has also appeared as an actress in TVs "One Life to Live," "Deco Drive" and such films as Spike Lees "Mo' Better Blues" and Oliver Stones "Any Given Sunday."
Gates open at 6 p.m. for both performances at the ballfield. Food and beverages will be for sale. Bring a chair or a blanket, but no coolers. For more information, call Simon at 693-8120.
