Speak the Word Late-Inning Rally Silences Seaborne Stealers 20-16

Nov. 28, 2006 — Speak the Word Ministries scored nine times in the sixth inning Monday night to complete a 20-16 comeback victory over the defending-champion Seaborne Stealers.
The Stealers, competing in the Bob Owens slow-pitch softball league, were sailing along with a 16-11 lead entering the sixth — the last inning because of time constraints. Then Speak the Word exploded. Mark Beharry went the distance on the mound for the win, while Samuel Ramos, the Stealers ace, took the loss.
Top hitters for Speak the Word were Kareem Dennis and Mike Franklin, both 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs between them. Dexter Skepple went 2 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs. For the Stealers, Owen Pimentel went 2 for 3 with two home runs and six RBIs, Freddie Pimentel 4 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs and Guido Schjang 3 for 3 with one RBI.
Batting first, Speak the Word got on the board right away with five runs in the top of the first inning. Skepple hit a three-run shot and Norbert Pickering and Franklin each had RBI singles. The Stealers answered with five runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game on a three-run blast off the bat of O. Pimentel, a solo shot by Dave Schjang and an RBI double by G. Schjang.
After Speak the Word failed to score in the top of the second, the Stealers took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the inning when they came up with an unearned run on a Speak the Word error.
Speak the Word would take a 7-6 lead in the top of the third on the strength of Franklins two-run bomb, but that lead proved short-lived. The Stealers exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the inning, taking a 14-7 lead after three. The Stealers scored eight runs on O. Pimentels second three-run shot of the game, two-run homers by Michael Schjang and Eustace Davis and an RBI single by F. Pimentel.
The score would hold until the top of the fifth, when Speak the Word scored four times on a two-run single by Skepple, a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ronald Hall and a Stealers error. Speak the Word got within three at 14-11. The Stealers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to five. They would not score again the rest of the way.
Word of a shortened game came to both teams from the umpire at the start of the sixth inning. Speak the Word took full advantage of their last at bat, scoring nine runs to put the Stealers in a four-run hole they were unable to climb out of. The runs in Speak the Word's sixth-inning rally came via a surprising grand slam off the bat of light hitter Ronald Halls, a three-run blast by Dennis, a solo shot by Jose Robles and an RBI single by Ulric Benjamin.
