DPNR Announces Opening of Conch Season


Jan. 10, 2008 – The season for queen conch harvesting opened on Jan 1, as included in the interim regulations announced in May of 2007, according to a press release from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources.
The interim regulations remain in effect. These include:
1. A quota of 50,000 lbs per year. After the quota is reached, the fishery will remain closed until Nov. 1 of the following year.
2. A limit of 200 conchs per boat for licensed commercial fishermen.
3. A limit of 6 conchs per person for recreational fishermen and a total of 24 conch per boat.
4. A closed season from July 1 until Sept. 30.
5. All conchs must be landed alive and in the shell.
6. No conchs may be possessed which are less than nine inches in length or less than 3/8 inch lip thickness.
7. Fishermen must report their landings monthly to the Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Final regulations are currently under consideration by the St. Thomas and St. Croix Fishery Advisory Committees and will be announced as soon as finalized and promulgated.
