Live from St. John, It's Saturday Afternoon

Jan. 12, 2008 — Superlatives were the order of the day Saturday when radio travel show host Stephanie Abrams broadcast "Traveling Feet" live from poolside at the Westin Resort and Villas on St. John.
"This is the sweetest place," she crooned to her audience in 40 markets in the northeast United States.
Abrams and her husband and technical assistant, Mark Abrams, arrived on St. John Wednesday after a stay at Bolongo Bay Beach Resort on St. Thomas. They broadcast from that location last weekend and will return to St. Thomas to broadcast from Marriott Frenchman's Reef Beach Resort next weekend.
Abrams said that many people don't get to know the Virgin Islands because they arrive by cruise ship and stay only for the day.
She lined up a roster of people to speak about the Westin as well as St. John's attributes.
"We do 300 weddings year, but typically only one a day," Westin sales director Andrea Heffner said during her turn at the microphone.
Abrams earlier in the week taped an in-depth interview with Rafe Boulon, chief of resources management at V.I. National Park. Boulon pointed out that much of the park land had been under cultivation at one time, and forests are still "recovering."
Abrams said the she recorded other segments with Boulon to run on shows when she's broadcasting from her base in Western Massachusetts.
The 12 hours she's broadcasting live from the Virgin Islands, she said, only scratches the "tip of the palm tree" when it comes to talking about the territory.
Toya Frazer-Ellis, who is the Westin's director of fun, Westin spa director Matthew Ellis and Patty Johnston, who owns the Westin and Cruz Bay Watersports, were on tap to talk about St. John.
Abrams also chatted via telephone with American Airlines Sales Director Stephen Gilman, who discussed the seasonal resumption of the airline's direct flight from Boston to St. Thomas.
She said one of the biggest challenges while in the Virgin Islands has been finding an ATM machine with money in it. She said she tried at several machines on St. Thomas but had no luck until she hit St. John.
Broadcasting Saturday also posed some challenges as Abrams faced telephone line noise and problems communicating with the home office. "That's some of the dangers of a remote," she said.
Abrams said she plans to broadcast from St. Croix in the upcoming months, and is ironing out the details.
She broadcasts "Traveling Feet" on Saturdays and "Live with Stephanie Abrams" on Sundays. Both are live shows.
"Live with Stephanie Abrams" broadcasts in 86 markets on Business Talk Radio.
Local listeners can tune in to "Traveling Feet" at www.sabrams.com because she said the show will be archived by Wednesday.
She said that Sunday's broadcast of "Live with Stephanie Abrams" will stream live between 8 and 10 p.m. on her website. It will then be archived for later listening.
