@Work: Surfside Spa

Jan. 13, 2008 — The scenic drive along South Shore Road begins to put one in the right, calm frame of mind for a bit of pampering — a mango body wrap, a custom marine facial — at Divi Carina Bay Resort's Surfside Spa.
"The Surfside Spa is unique with the setting, a caring staff and healing rituals used to discover who you are," said spa manager Dwight Zieman.
Zieman, a native of North Dakota, and his wife, Ela, bring many years of experience in pampering clients – more than 20 years each in the spa business.
Before coming to the islands they worked at resorts in Las Vegas. Zieman also ran the spa at the Buccaneer for a while as well as one on Tortola.
On entering the Surfside Spa, the striking blue shades of the walls echo the sea outside. The backdrop through the private balcony doors, is, of course, the real Caribbean.
Maryann Whitmore, owner of seven Divi Resorts, did the design and decorating, with accents of gold in pillows, soft quilted coverlets and silken drapes. Bamboo flooring adds to the island look. Paintings with cool blues and warm gold help create a calm feeling in the spa.
And the spa staff makes you feel like an old friend.
Zieman welcomes visitors with special little touches that "add some fun to the spa experience," he said. First, a glass of cold water. Then, out of a leather pouch the customer picks a polished stone such as tigers eye, rose quartz or jade, each with its own story.
There are three treatment rooms and four massage therapists for treatments such as island-inspired body polishes and body wraps of mango, coconut and citrus. There is a couples massage room if partners want to relax together.
The body polish of mango or coconut stimulates circulation adding natural minerals to the skin for a relaxed feeling. Mango, Mandarin, pineapple, quince and white peach wraps help to nourish the skin's surface giving a smooth and softened texture, Zieman said.
The spa offers Swedish relaxation massages and deep tissue sports massages, as well as brow, lip, bikini and full leg waxing. For hot stone therapy, black basalt stones are placed strategically on the back to release tension.
The pedicure room is equipped with a pedicure throne that gives a stimulating back massage while one of two nail technicians does the pedicure. The manicure and pedicure products are from the Essie line.
"We do individualized skin care using essential oils for after-sun or anti-aging treatments," Zieman said.
Estheticians offer a cleansing facial and custom marine facial using "Bioelements" skin care products, for sale along with "Archipelago" body products such as sugar scrubs.
Five specialized packages are available with different combinations of pedicures, manicures, wraps, polishes and massages.
"At the spa we create a healing ritual with a journey into deep relaxation," Zieman said.
Asked what he likes most about St. Croix, he says it's the people. "I enjoy being part of a community that is diverse, friendly and that holds so much potential," he said.
But the beach, where he likes to windsurf and snorkel, apparently comes in a close second. He also admits to enjoying some time on a hammock with a good book.
"Tension is who you think you should be — relaxation is who you are," Zieman said.
The spa is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. They are open until 9 p.m. on Tuesday for after-work relaxation. And Divi Casino players may rack up points to be redeemed for spa services.
