Jan. 18, 2008 — The Seaborne Stealers scored seven runs in a sixth-inning rally Thursday night to blow open a close game at the Estate Profit ballpark, then held off Speak the Word for a 17-13 victory.
The game, a matchup of two of the top three teams in the Bob Owens Slow Pitch Softball League, was everything the fans expected from these teams, but in the end it was the Stealers rebounding from their first lost of the season last week to get back in the win column.
Batting first, the Stealers got on the board right away with five runs in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by Enrique Soto and Raymond Cintron, an RBI double by Freddie Pimentel, and sacrifice flies by Owen Pimentel and Angel Torres. Speak the Word was equal to the task in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at five in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Norbert Pickering and Jose Robles and a three-run home run off the bat of Carlos Morales.
After a scoreless second inning, the Stealers took a one-run lead in the top of the third on a solo shot by Cintron to lead 6-5 at the end of three innings, as Speak the Word failed to score in the bottom of the inning.
Speak the Word then took an 8-6 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run homer by Sylvester McIntosh after the Stealers came up empty in the top of the inning.
That lead did not last long, as the Stealers took the lead for good in the top of the fifth with four runs on a three-run home run by Soto and a solo shot by Owen Pimentel to go up 10-8. Speak the Word could only answer with one run in the bottom of the inning on Morales' second home run of the game, and they trailed 10-9 going to the sixth inning.
The Stealers erupted for seven huge runs in the top of the sixth to take what proved to be an insurmountable lead at 17-9. They scored seven runs on two-run home runs by Michael Schjang and Cintron, a solo shot by Freddie Pimentel, and RBI singles by Soto and Dave Schjang. Speak the Word battled back in the bottom of the inning with four runs on a two-run home run by Ronald Hall and sac flies by Kareem Dennis and Robles to trail 17-13 after six completed innings. It would turn out to be as close as they would get, as both teams failed to score in the seventh.
Stealers ace Samuel Ramos picked up the win on the mound, while Speak the Word's spot starter, McIntosh, took the loss. Top hitters for the Stealers were, Cintron, 4 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs; Michael Schjang, 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs; Soto, 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs; and Owen and Freddie Pimentel, both 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. For Speak the Word, McIntosh went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, Morales went 2 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs, Dennis went 3 for 4 with one RBI and Robles went 2 for 3 with one RBI.
