Award-Winning Author Sharon Draper Coming to St. Thomas


Feb. 4, 2008 — Sharon M. Draper, New York Times bestselling children's author and five-time winner of the Coretta Scott King Literary Award, is coming to St. Thomas to talk to the general public, as well as teachers and students.
Draper is author of the series Ziggy and the Black Dinosaurs, as well as the novels Tears of a Tiger, Darkness Before Dawn and her latest book which won her her fifth Corrett Scott King Award, November Blues.
She will hold workshops at the Sports Fitness Center at the University of the Virgin Islands from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 14 for elementary students and from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m. for secondary school students. That evening the public is invited to hear her speak from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef Resort. On Feb. 15, Draper will hold workshops at the Reef for elementary and second school teachers as she explores writing, and literacy and discusses her novels.
Anyone who owns one of Draper's books is encouraged to bring it along, as she will sign books following her workshops and the public presentation.
Draper has lectured around the world and has been honored by two presidents for her writing and literacy work. She was selected Teacher of the Year and Outstanding High School Language Arts Educator in Ohio, and has received awards from Howard University and from her alma mater, Pepperdine University. Her award-winning essay on education, "The Touch of a Teacher," was published by the National Governor's Association as part of a guide on what governors need to know about education.
Teachers from St. Thomas and St. John who are interested in attending a workshop or bringing students to a workshop should contact Cedelle Niles at the Department of Education which, along with the Marriott, is sponsoring Draper's visit.
