Charity Girls Dole Out $9,500 in Grants

Feb. 3, 2008 — The Charity Girls gathered at the home of Joyce Bailey Wednesday to make their first annual grants to assist with causes benefiting women and children in St. Thomas. A total of $9,500 in grants was provided to three organizations: Family Resource Center ($3,500), Nana Baby Home ($3,500) and Girl Power ($2,500).
The Charity Girls group was formed in early 2007. Members are Virgin Islands women who decided that they wanted to help women and children in their community and have fun doing it.
Each month two of the Charity Girls members host a dinner for the group, and collect donations at the dinner. Their goal is to raise at least $10,000 each year for their charitable giving.
"We are a successful group of women and we feel that it is our duty to give back to the community which has allowed us to grow and prosper," said hostess Joyce Bailey, one of the group's cofounders.
"We hope other women will form groups to do the same thing. Dinners for a cause are a great way for women to network and have fun while raising a substantial amount of money, " said Deborah Kreke Davis, another co-founder.
Dee Baecher-Brown, president of Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, said, "We are honored that the Charity Girls have allowed us to help them with their philanthropy. CFVI is able to handle the financial management and administration for the Charity Girls, to ensure that their philanthropy continues to be fun. And because of the generosity of CFVI's Angel donors, we can provide this service at no cost to the Charity Girls Fund."
There are more than 90 named funds at CFVI providing scholarships, grants and supporting programs in the USVI. CFVI also produces the annual KIDS COUNT report on the status of children and families in the V.I. and recently celebrated the first year of accomplishments of The Family Connection, an initiative that supports the enrichment of early childhood education in the Territory.
Individuals or businesses wishing to know more about CFVI should call 774-6031, or visit their website.
