Landmarks Society Sponsors 'Starving Artists Day'

Feb. 27, 2008 – The St. Croix Landmarks Society presents the 20th Annual Starving Artists Day Spring Show and Calypso Heritage Performance. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Sunday, March 9, at Whim Museum in Frederiksted. Tickets will be sold at the door; admission fees are $5 per person, and children under 12-years-old are free.
The Landmarks Society’s fundraising events will showcase over 70 Caribbean artists, jewelers, craftspeople and food vendors. Locally-made and original crafts, jewelry, fine art, ceramics, mahogany works, Mocko Jumbie sculptures, madras crafts, photography, fabrics, silks, plants, books, leather goods, candles, perfume oils, and lotions. Food and drink booths will feature local delectables such as patés, johnny cakes, fritters, shish kabobs, fried fish, cakes, tarts, breads, fraco, smoothies, liquors and juices. SCLS’s cash bar will be available all day. Interested booth vendors and flea market vendors can register in person at Whim Museum through March 8.
A special addition to the event is a performance by King Derby’s Junior Calypsonians from Calypso Inc, backed by Xpress Band. For one hour, beginning at 2 p.m., St. Croix’s young future Calypsonians will perform songs with themes on local issues that affect their generation.
Other unique opportunities throughout the great family day include: a community flea market, an open house of the SCLS Research Library and Archives, an open house of the Greathouse, self-guided tours of the Whim Grounds, shopping in the Museum Gift Shop, and a special cash raffle, according to a press release from the St. Croix Landmarks Society.
