Broken Equipment Holds Up New Driver's Licenses on St. John

March 6, 2008 — A broken camera and busted air conditioning mean that drivers can't get new licenses on St. John, Motor Vehicle Bureau Assistant Director Myrna George said Thursday.
Residents can do the paperwork on St. John, but will have to go to St. Thomas to complete the process.
However, drivers who need to renew their licenses and still look the same as they did when they last renewed them or those who need to replace lost licenses are in luck. George said the Motor Vehicles Bureau can retrieve those photos from the computer system.
She said the camera lens has a crack in it. It can't be repaired because the company no longer makes parts.
George said that a new driver's license system is on its way. She said the system is the same as the ones used on St. Thomas and St. Croix. However, the new system is climate-sensitive and can't be installed until the air conditioning unit is replaced.
She said the air conditioning system has caused problems "for some time" and went down again last week.
"We Band-Aided the air conditioning as much as we could," she said.
George estimated that it would be another week before installation begins on the air conditioning system.
She apologized for the inconvenience.
