Brief: Francis in Washington for Lieutenant Governors Conference

March 11, 2008 — Lt. Gov. Gregory R. Francis has gone to Washington, D.C., to attend the Winter Meeting of the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA).
"This meeting is an outstanding opportunity to bring home practical solutions to shared problems," Francis said, according to a news release from his office. "Many of the territory's issues are not unique."
The two-day meeting will feature experts speaking about exploding prison populations and ways to address re-entry of offenders into society. The attendees will be briefed on congressional action that may impact their jurisdictions, with a special emphasis on health care and transportation. The unique challenges of smaller and rural communities will also be addressed.
Francis plans to participate in discussions on various policy resolutions covering such topics as the presidential primaries, the digital divide, interoperability of emergency communicators, asthma and cardiovascular awareness. He also plans to report on the successful launch of Helping Virgin Islanders Breathe Easier — the local component of a multi-state asthma awareness/ public health initiative of the NLGA.
