Reds Erupt to Beat Yankees, 12-2

March 16, 2008 — Leo Castillo pitched two innings of no-hit baseball on Saturday to help the Reds stymie the Yankees on Saturday 12-2 at the D.C. Canegata Ballpark.
The game was knotted at two after four innings but the Reds' fifth-inning rally proved to be the beginning of the end for the Yankees.
Batting first, the Reds scored one run in the top of the first inning on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Toni Graci. The Yankees came up empty in the bottom of the inning.
After the Reds failed to score in the top of the second inning, the Yankees tied the game at one on Akeem Knight’s RBI single. The Reds retook the lead at 2-1 in the top of the third on a Yankees error, but the Yankees failed to respond in the bottom of the inning.
An unearned run by the Yankees in the bottom of the fourth, after the Reds came up empty in the top of the inning, tied the game at two heading into the fifth inning. It would be the last run that would cross the plate for the Yankees.
The Reds scored all the runs they would need to win the game in the top of the fifth when they erupted for five runs to take a 7-2 lead, and they would never trail again. They scored five runs on a two-run single by Sauline Saldana, an RBI triple by Michael Ferrante, an RBI single by Santiago and a Yankees error.
Castillo then came on in relief of Sergio Santiago in the bottom of the fifth inning, and it was practically lights out for the Yankees. His line over the final two innings read two innings pitched, no hits, no runs and eight strikeouts.
The Reds added another five runs in the top of the sixth inning to complete the 12-2 win.
Castillo picked up the win in relief for the Reds, while Lakish Plante got the loss for the Yankees. Top hitters for the Reds were Saldana, 1 for 2 with three RBIs and Blake Carter was 2 for 3 with one RBI. For the Yankees. Knight was 1 for 2 with an RBI and Jamie bates was 1 for 2.
In the day’s early game, the Dodgers blasted the Angels, 16-2, in the 10-12 division. It was the Dodgers with 16 runs on 12 hits with two errors, while the Angels had two runs on two hits with three errors.
Romani Hansen was the winning pitcher while Brian Encarnacion got the loss for the Angels. Top hitters for the suns were, Conroy Samuel, 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Reneah Guzman was 2 for 3 with one RBI. For the Angels, Akeem Reefer was 1 for 2 with a home run and one RBI and Shyeem Gilbert was 1 for 2 with one RBI.
In game two, contested in the 7-9 division, the Suns shut out the L’il Angels 14-0. They had 14 runs on 12 hits with two errors and the L’il Angels had no runs on two hits with three errors. Top hitters for the Suns were Akido Lindquist, 4 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, Aramis Bermudez, 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Kimoi Ferdinand was 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs.
For the L’il Angels, Rashawn Bergen was 1 for 1 and Emelio Denton was 1 for 2.
