Police Find Weapon After Stop and Save Robbery

April 3, 2008 — A police dive team recovered a weapon that investigators believe was used in a robbery by one of two gunmen Wednesday night at the Stop and Save Store near D.C. Canegata Ballpark.
Police spokeswoman Melody Rames said in a statement that the department's five-member dive team recovered the gun about 6 a.m. Thursday in waters near the Protestant Cay ferry dock in the vicinity of Fort Christianvaern.
Eyewitnesses told police they saw one of the two run toward the dock and throw an object in the water shortly after the robbery was reported to police about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday. He was then tackled by police.
Rames said one of the gunmen was a 22-year-old man but his name has still not been released.
The man has not formally been charged, and Rames said he remains hospitalized with four gunshot wounds to the buttocks, lower back, arm and shoulder that he may have suffered during gunfire exchanges with police.
Police said the two gunmen entered Super Save Wednesday night, pointed a gun at a female cashier and demanded money. One of the men then reached over the counter into the cash register and the two left with an undisclosed amount of cash.
At the time, a plainclothes Superior Court marshal was entering the store and the men attempted to rob him, too.
The marshal was not hurt, and he and police officers who gave chase are being hailed by Police Commissioner James McCall for a job well done.
Police said the men fled in a vehicle that had been reported stolen. Investigators later recovered an undisclosed amount of cash in the stolen getaway vehicle after it crashed a short distance away.
Witnesses told police that after the vehicle crashed, the gunmen fled on foot.
The investigation is ongoing and police ask anyone with information on the robbery or the individual still at large to contact the investigations bureau by calling 911 or 778-4950.
