June 21, 2008 – The United States Library of Congress has selected the U.S. Virgin Islands Election System's Web site, www.vivote.gov, for inclusion in the historic collection of Internet materials related to Election 2008, according to a press release from the V.I. Supervisor of Elections.
The Library of Congress preserves the nation's cultural artifacts and provides enduring access to them. Its traditional function is to acquire, catalogue and preserve historical collections of importance to the Congress and to the American people.
The library's election Web site archives are important because they contribute to the historical record of national and local elections, capturing information that could otherwise be lost. With the growing role of the Internet as an influential medium, records of historical events could be considered incomplete without materials that were "born digital" and never printed on paper. Three previous election web archives were developed in 2000, 2002 and 2004.
"It is my hope and anticipation that this small honor is a representation of the standard of work delivered by the management and staff of the V.I. Election Systems and the Boards of Elections of the Virgin Islands," said John Abramson Jr., supervisor of elections. "Our Web site provides our residents with information and links regarding past and present elections. It is updated regularly to provide current information and data, especially with the upcoming 2008 primary and general elections."
