July 9, 2008 — Kori Vialet led three players in double figures with 20 points Tuesday night as Guidance blew by the Dread Eyes 73-61 in a game that was not as close as the score would indicate.
The Choices Basketball Association contest, played at the Educational Complex gymnasium, started fast as both teams really pushed the ball. With that style of play Dread Eyes was able to stay pretty close to Guidance in the first quarter, and they only trailed by four at 23-19 by the end of the period. At the start of the second quarter, however, Guidance came out with a full-court press that completely unraveled the Dread Eyes.
This defensive strategy forced numerous turnovers by the Dread Eyes, and Guidance took full advantage in outscoring them 28-12 in the period to lead 56-31 at the half. Vialet's tenacious defense on the Dread Eyes guards was exceptional and he came away with several steals in the quarter that enabled him to explode for 12 second-quarter points.
The second half was more of the same, but Guidance did call off the dogs for awhile in the third quarter. This enabled the Dread Eyes to make a bit of a run and close the gap to 16 points at the end of the period at 59-43.
Apparently that was too close for Guidance, and they came back with the full-court press to start the fourth. The results were the same as earlier in the game. Guidance quickly opened up a large lead and then called off the dogs. Facing a more lax defense, the Dread Eyes were able to score more freely to make the final score a more respectable 12-point loss at 73-61.
Along with his game-high 20 points, Vialet also pulled down six rebounds and had four steals. Teammates Mathew Ogarro and Richard Isles chipped in with 14 points each. Ogarro also had four assist and Isles chipped in with three blocks. For the Dread Eyes, Ivor James led his team with 14 points.
The Chosen Ones 85, Speak the Word 64
In the night's early game, the Chosen Ones blew out a good but young Speak the Word team 85-64. Wilson Fererance led the Chosen Ones with a game-high 22 points. Teammates Glenroy Coggins netted 16 points and Nybo Rogers dropped in 12. For Speak the Word, Jermaine Mulley led with 18 points and Marcello Jacob scored 10.
