The Virgin Islands Police Department will conduct driver’s license and vehicle registration traffic checkpoints during May at undisclosed locations in the St. Croix District.

In an effort to reduce the number of people killed and injured in car crashes, checkpoints are conducted to identify people driving without driver’s licenses or with expired licenses to get them off the street, as well as educate the public on the dangers of driving without driver’s license.

Checkpoints are a proven and effective method for achieving this goal, the department said in a press release announcing the program. By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, the Virgin Islands Police Department believes motorists can be deterred from driving without driver’s license and operating unregistered vehicles.

Traffic volume and weather permitted, vehicles may be checked, and drivers who are not licensed and/or operating unregistered vehicles may be ticketed and/or arrested. The objective is to send a clear message to those who are operating vehicles without a valid driver’s license and/or unregistered vehicles.
