Students Qualify to Participate in Territorial Geography Bee

Six students representing the territory’s public and private schools have qualified for participation in the 2011 Territorial Geography Bee examination which will be administered at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 1, at the St. Thomas-St. John District Curriculum Center in Estate Tutu, according to a press release from the Office of the Superintendent of the St. Thomas-St. John School District.
Annie Smith, district social studies coordinator, said that the selected students received accolades for their knowledge of world geography from their various schools during competitions and were administered a pretest for admission to the territorial competition. Smith said, “Our 2011 Geography Bee winners are: Liquan Cruz – Addelita Cancryn Junior High; Jamon Fisk – St. Croix Country Day School; Isabel Setorie – Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School; Chirag D. Sharma – Antilles School; Kiwanee Smith – Gladys A. Abraham Elementary; and, DeVaughn R. Taylor – John Woodson Junior High."
As a group, they will take the National Geographic Society Geography State Test, with each student independently completing the 60 question examination within a period of 60 minutes. Completed answer sheets will be faxed, immediately upon completion, to the National Geographic Society Geography Bee Office in Washington, D.C. The student who obtains the highest score will represent the U.S. Virgin Islands in Washington, D.C. at the National Geographic Society Geography Bee Competition in May.
