Botanical Garden Celebrates National Public Gardens Day

0

The St. George Village Botanical Garden will celebrate the third annual National Public Gardens Day, Friday, May 6, by offering free admission for two adults and/or children to Virgin Islands residents and island visitors who present a printed copy of the voucher available at www.sgvbg.org. Visitors must present this voucher to receive free admission.
National Public Gardens Day is a national day of celebration to raise awareness of America’s public gardens and their important role in promoting environmental stewardship and awareness, plant and water conservation, and education in communities nationwide. The day celebrates all public gardens, botanical gardens, educational gardens, specialty gardens, entertainment gardens, arboreta, farm gardens, historical landscapes and zoos, and each institution participates in their own unique way. Many of the nation’s public gardens will mark the day with special events and activities for schools, families and thousands of visitors to explore and discover their local public garden, while learning about each garden’s commitment to education, research and environmental stewardship.
All photographers are encouraged to enter the National Public Gardens Day Photo Contest. Beginning May 1 and continuing through May 11, garden visitors across the nation are invited to shoot and submit photos capturing the beauty and experience of visiting one of America’s public gardens. More information at http://nationalpublicgardensday.org/photo-contest/
Guided tours of the garden will be offered at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m., led by Executive Director David M. Hamada. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for self-guided tours (visitors are not admitted after 4 p.m. to allow for at least an hour to tour the grounds). The volunteer-plant nursery will be open Friday from 9-11 a.m. and offers a variety of native and exotic plants suited to local growing conditions.
The 3rd Annual National Public Gardens Day is a sponsored by the American Public Gardens Association (APGA), the Rainbird Corporation, and Better Homes and Gardens Magazine. Founded in 1940, Pennsylvania-based American Public Gardens Association is an organization devoted to strengthening the public gardens throughout North America. With over 70 years of work increasing cooperation and awareness among the gardens, APGA has built a membership of more than 500 public gardens located in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada and seven other countries. Their members include public gardens as well as arboreta and zoos. The St. George Village Botanical Garden is a 16.5 acre public garden that overlaps two historic districts listed in the National Registry for Historic Places. It aspires to share the complete human history of the island of St. Croix using living displays to interpret the interaction of people and plants over the 2,000 year history of this very special site.
