In celebration of Buck Island Reef’s 50th anniversary years as a National Monument, the National Park Service continues its public lectures about Buck Island Reef National Monument on every second Thursday of each month.
August’s lecture, entitled “Buck Island’s Fisheries: Are Fishes Recovering?” will be held from 5-6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, in the Danish Guinea West India Company Warehouse/Slave Market Building. This month’s lecture reflects on the NPS inventory and monitoring team’s participation in the evaluation of the fish population in Virgin Islands waters. In particular, both St. Croix’s Buck Island and St. John’s V.I. management teams have been working hard to understand the impact that establishing marine protected areas in both parks has had on helping our fisheries come back from the edge. The resource management staff will present recent findings of the program and describe what NPS does to count the fish in the sea. The Christiansted National Historic Site parking lot will be free and open for this event until 7 p.m.
