Annual Holiday Tradition Brings Crowds to Roosevelt Park

With twinkling holiday lights overhead and Christmas music in the air, We From Upstreet Inc. kept its 17-year holiday tradition alive for crowds gathered at Roosevelt Park Monday evening.

For the second night of the three-night celebration, residents and visitors were treated to a night of cultural dancing and live music under a magical canopy of holiday lights that filled most every tree.

“Peace, joy and love in our community: That is why I look forward to this event each year,” said Joseph Sibilly Elementary School teacher Joycelyn Issac.

While Sunday evening marked the official tree lighting, Monday evening’s activities focused on the presentation of cultural awards honoring the Voices of Love Choir, directed by Glenn “Kwabena” Davis, and honorary We From Upstreet member Clifton “Cliff” Finch.

The Voices of Love Choir has been an essential part of the event since We From Upstreet’s first Christmas tree lighting in 1995.

Family and friends welcomed home holiday travelers, greeting each other with hugs and cheer, while others caught up on news and reminisced on the generations who have attended this holiday favorite. The Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School jazz combo delights the holiday crowds.

“I am here with my granddaughter this year,” said Vashti Liborg. “Our family loves the holiday music and holiday feeling.”

The crowd gathered this night was entertained by the musical offerings of perennial favorite, Milo’s Kings.

We From Upstreet hosts the annual event as a way of thanking the residents and neighborhood volunteers who support a series of free concerts throughout the year.

The theme of this year’s festivities is “Making Spirits Bright with the Joy of Christmas Lights.”

If the smiles that lit up the faces of those gathered Monday night were any indicator, it was mission accomplished for event organizers. Festivities continue Tuesday evening with nostalgic music.
