Volunteers who want to preserve the beauty of St. Croix will be up early this weekend, cleaning up litter all along the Captain Morgan 70.3 Ironman Triathlon route on Saturday and Sunday and diving around the Christiansted boardwalk for an underwater cleanup Saturday morning.

Community volunteers Shawn Widerski and Clint Briggs are coordinating an Underwater Christiansted Boardwalk Cleanup and said volunteer are needed in the water and on land. Please meet at the SCUBA compressor room at 8 a.m.

Certified divers are asked to bring their dive gear. St Croix Ultimate Bluewater Adventures (SCUBA) will provide tanks and weights. The Waste Management Authority will provide a large bin at the end of Queen Cross Street. For more information or to sign up, please call Clint Briggs or Shawn Widerski at SCUBA 773-5994.

This is the fourth year the St. Croix Environmental Association has organized the cleanup of the triathlon route, according to SEA’s announcement and invitation.

According to SEA education coordinator Lynnea Roberts, the route is divided into 25 sections of two – three miles. “We are expecting 300 to 350 volunteers from local schools, churches, businesses, homeowners associations and agencies,” the release said.

Roberts said that in previous years, volunteers in the cleanup have removed more than 1,000 bags of litter, hundreds of bags of aluminum cans, as well as appliances, metal scraps and tires from the 56-mile route.

Some sections of the route this year are still in need of extra hands, Roberts said.

To help out Saturday, meet at:
– Salt River Marina at 7:45 a.m.;
– Cheeseburgers in Paradise at 8 a.m.;
– Solitude Store (Ziggy’s) at 8 a.m.;
– Grove Place junction at 8 a.m.;
– Salt River Marina at 9:00 a.m. (a different group heading the other way from the 7:45 a.m. group).

On Sunday, volunteers are asked to meet at:
– Cane Bay at 8 a.m.;
– Solitude Store (Ziggy’s) at 1 p.m.

Coordinators will have a few extra pairs of gloves for extra volunteers, but if you have your own, please bring them. Garbage bags will be provided. Teams usually finish in less than three hours.

V.I. Regulated Waste Management will provide three large trash bins and the WMA will pick up tires and other materials that can’t be placed in the bins, according to the statement from SEA.

Seven Seas Water Corporation sponsored the cleanup and Gallow’s Bay Hardware, Home Depot and Caribe Do-It Center all donated supplies. Traffic cones provided by VIAPCO.

For more information or to join a team, call Roberts at SEA at 773-1989.
