United Jazz Foundation Collaborates with Jazz at Lincoln Center to Enhance V.I. Music Program

0

United Jazz Foundation (UJF), administrator of the music education program "Mentoring Through the Arts of Music" (MTAM), is collaborating with New York-based, non-profit music organization Jazz at Lincoln Center to add new teachers to its roster and to implement a new program for children eight years old and under on the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Through this collaboration, Jazz at Lincoln Center — a long-standing organization headed by world-renowned trumpeter Wynton Marsalis — will provide industry advice and teaching tools as well as teachers and will work with UJF to help identify and reach sponsors to enhance "Mentoring Through the Arts of Music’s" current program on the U.S.V.I. This includes workshops and sessions at the area’s high schools as well as at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). Jazz at Lincoln Center will also provide musicians to participate in the program’s free Community Concert Series on St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix, and is currently exploring a Virgin Islands extension of its Webop® program, which offers interactive learning sessions for young children.
As part of the partnership, bassist Russell Hall and pianist Antonio Madruga will join drummer Dion Parson, and MTAM graduate and trumpeter Kai Richardson to present and teach master classes and other relevant workshops during the Summer Band Program at UVI July 24-26. "Mentoring Through the Arts of Music," which has been included in UVI’s Summer Band Program for the last four years, will also employ trumpeter Marcus Printup–a member of the renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, as a teacher and mentor. The musicians will also participate in the Summer Band Final Concert and Award Ceremony on July 24, which will feature the graduating students.
"Mentoring Through the Arts of Music," in collaboration with the Department of Human Services (Foster-care), will also work with Jazz at Lincoln Center Webop Instructor Riza Printup to present the first-ever U.S.V.I. Webop interactive showcase for children eight and under at Kids Pre School, St. Thomas, on July 25. Parents are encouraged to dance and sing along with their kids as they play on various instruments while learning about jazz, swing, improvisation and more. Participants will also receive a free copy of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s most recent CD for toddlers, Webop: A Family Jazz Party, and other fun giveaways while supplies last.
Major support for "Mentoring Through the Arts of Music" is provided by the V.I. Council on the Arts, the V.I. Department of Planning and Resources, the V.I. Department of Tourism, International Capital & Management Company, University of the Virgin Islands, AVIS Rental Car and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
