“Pursuit of Happyness” Chris Gardner Will Be 2015 Man-Up Speaker Millionaire entrepreneur, New York Times best-selling author and philanthropist Chris Gardner will be the featured speaker at the University of the Virgin Islands’ fifth annual Man-Up Male Empowerment Conference. The conference is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas Campus and on Wednesday, Feb. 11, on the grounds of the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. VIUCEDD to Offer American Sign Language Classes on St. Thomas, St. Croix Beginning Feb. 9 Classes in American Sign Language will be offered by the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) from Feb. 9 through April 16, on St. Thomas and St. Croix. Two levels of instruction will be offered. Beginners Level I classes are scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays. Beginners Level II classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sessions on St. Thomas will run from 5:30-7 p.m. in Room 114 of the Teacher Education building on UVI’s St. Thomas Campus. St. Croix sessions will take place from 5:45-7:15 p.m. at the VIUCEDD Office, at No. 1 Golden Grove. The cost is $150 per course. UVI Receives Carnegie Community Engagement Classification Status The University of the Virgin Islands received Community Engagement Classification status from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The Carnegie Foundation grants this designation to colleges and universities that have an institutional focus on community engagement. Institutions participate voluntarily by submitting required materials describing the nature and extent of their engagement with the community. UVI is one of 361 institutions nationwide who have received this designation since the inception of the program. VIUCEDD to Host Disability 101 Autism Conference VIUCEDD will host Disability 101 Autism trainings from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 in Business Building BUS-110 on the St. Thomas Campus. Trainings will also be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Jan. 29, in the UVI Cooperative Extension Room CES-113. The training is titled “Disability 101: Everything You Wanted to Know About Autism and Other High Incidence Disabilities But Were Afraid to Ask.”
VIUCEDD Associate Director Dr. Kimberly Mills and Island Therapy Solutions Clinical Psychologist Dr. Lindsy Wagner will facilitate the trainings. The VIUCEDD sessions will provide an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorders, other pervasive developmental disorders and high incidence disabilities in general. This training will highlight the latest research into programs and methodologies shown to mitigate some of the problems associated with having a diagnosis of autism and general strategies for working with other people with high incidence disabilities.

UVI Prepares Territory to Work with Renewable Resources As the territory continues to explore alternative sources of energy to combat the high cost of electricity, UVI is doing its part to make sure the local workforce is poised to meet the growing needs of the industry.
The university, through its Caribbean Green Technology Center (CGTC), will be offering an entry-level program designed specifically for individuals who are interested in the green and renewable energy field. The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) Entry-Level Photovoltaic Program (PV) will be offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 26-30, at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus.
