St. Croix Boy Scout Earns Eagle Scout Award

Philip Kenneth Edwards Philip Kenneth Edwards of St. Croix has earned the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to scouts: the Eagle Scout award. He will be recognized at an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Good Hope Country Day School Pavilion. Edwards will become the sixteenth scout to attain this high honor in Troop 7227, chartered by Good Hope Country Day School.
To attain the rank of Eagle Scout, the candidate must earn 21 merit badges, 13 of which are specifically required, and successfully complete a community-related service project. Edwards worked closely with Youth With A Mission, St. Croix (YWAM) to design and build an aquaponics system to assist YWAM to reduce its food costs. This is an integrated system that combines fish and plants to help each other grow. He planned and executed the project by leading a group of 22 scouts and adult volunteers from YWAM staff and friends over a period of weeks. He undertook to help establish and maintain the system for nine months, and it is currently in full production.
Less than four percent of all Boy Scouts in the United States attain the Eagle rank. Outstanding U.S. citizens who have become Eagle Scouts include former President Gerald Ford, astronaut Neil Armstrong and former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, who is the current national president of the Boy Scouts of America.
Edwards, a home-schooled senior, is the son of Dale and Lori Edwards, and is the third Eagle Scout from this family. His immediate plan following graduation is to participate in a five-month long discipleship training school, through Youth With A Mission.
All Eagle Scouts are invited to attend and participate in the ceremony.
